Who We Are
Mercy Health Network
History
Mercy Health Network is an integrated system of member hospitals and
other health and patient care facilities - united into an operating
organization to improve the delivery of health care services to the
people of Iowa and surrounding communities. It was created July 1,
1998, as a joint operating organization formed by Catholic Health Initiatives
(CHI) and Trinity Health.
Catholic Health Initiatives, which includes Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines,
was created in 1996 by merging organizations sponsored by 12 religious congregations.
CHI has 65,000 employees, owns 69 hospitals and 43 long-term care, assisted
and independent living and residential facilities, five community based health
organizations located in 19 states across the Midwest and Northwest. It is
the second-largest Catholic health system in the United States.
Trinity Health, which includes Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, was created by the consolidation of Holy Cross Health System and Mercy Health Services in 2000 and is the fourth-largest Catholic health system in the United States. Trinity Health has 44 hospitals and 379 outpatient facilities in seven states, has 44,950 employees, and $5.7 billion annual operating revenue.
Mercy Health Network was created to add value to participating organizations and communities by reducing costs, improving quality of health care, increasing accessibility of care, and enhancing services to patients and their families. As a result, there are seven Mercy Medical Centers, which are located in Mason City, Des Moines, Dubuque, Clinton, Sioux City, Centerville, and New Hampton. A full continuum of services is provided within the Iowa-based network including four community hospitals, 24 affiliated hospitals, 98 physician clinic sites, 12,200 employees, and more than $1 billion annual operating revenue. The network also includes other facilities such as nursing homes and inpatient hospices. While Mercy Health Network provides integrated financial and management services to operate network facilities, it does not own the hospitals or other member facilities.
In July 1999, each of the own facilities changed their name to Mercy Medical Center. This was just another means of unifying the network and giving it a common identity across the state.
