Welcome to Surgery

We realize the surgical process may be a very stressful time for you and your family. To decrease a small part of that stress, we want to assist you by providing information that you will need both before and after surgery.

Welcome to SurgeryTo help you prepare for surgery, you will be called one or two days prior to your surgery to review your pre-surgery instructions and arrival time. If you haven't been reached at the number your doctor provided to us, you may call 641.422.7798 or 1.800.433.3883, ext. 7798 after 1 p.m. on the day before surgery. If your surgery is scheduled on a Monday, please call on the previous Friday.

When you arrive for surgery, report to the Patient Registration Office, which is located adjacent to the main lobby on first floor south of Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, East Campus, 1000 4th Street SW, Mason City. If your procedure (primarily cataracts and other eye procedures) is performed at the West Campus, report to their Patient Registration via the North Entrance. Maps are provided if you are not familiar with the location of our campuses or departments within the health center.

Anesthesia Evaluation Visit and Pre-Admission Testing (PAT)

Your surgeon may schedule you to visit with an anesthesia provider. This visit is an important step in preparing you for your surgery. The surgeon's staff will arrange all of the appointments and notify you of the dates and times.

Most Anesthesia Evaluation Visits are held on Tuesdays or Thursdays between the hours of 1 and 3:30 p.m. Please allow approximately two hours for this visit. When you arrive, please register in the Patient Registration office on first floor of Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa. Your family members or anyone you wish to accompany you are welcome to attend this session. You will be directed to a Pre-Admission Testing nurse, who will develop your plan of care and teach you about your surgery.

An anesthesia provider will evaluate your medical history and lab tests that are available at the time of your visit. Your anesthesia options then will be discussed with you.

From this Anesthesia Evaluation Visit, we hope that you will receive helpful information and will feel better prepared for your day in surgery.
