Common Injuries of the Wrist/Hand

- Sprains
- Wrist and finger sprains.
Common in football, baseball, softball, and wrestling.
Caused by a hyperflexion or hyperextension of a joint or by a jamming force applied to a joint.
Symptoms - Pain, swelling, difficulty moving the wrist or fingers, and throbbing pain.
- Tendonitis
- Tendonitis of the flexor tendons in the wrist and hand.
Common in most racquet sports such as tennis and racquetball.
Caused by overuse of the wrist muscles and tendons.
Symptoms - Pain on active use or passive stretching of involved tendon.
- Fractures
- Wrist, hand, and finger fractures.
Common in wrestling, football, baseball, softball, and soccer.
Caused by direct impact over the bone or by a force on an outstretched hand.
Symptoms - Pain and weakness in area of fracture, point tenderness over fracture
site, some swelling, and deformity may be present.
- Contusions
- Wrist, hand and finger contusions.
Common in football, wrestling, and soccer.
Caused by direct impact over unprotected hand or fingers.
Symptoms - Pain and swelling of the soft tissue.
- Dislocations
- Finger dislocations.
Common in contact sports such as football, soccer, and wrestling.
Caused by a blow to the tip of a finger or by a violent twisting of the
fingers.
Symptoms - Pains, severe swelling, hematoma, and deformity.
