Common Injuries of the Elbow/Forearm
- Contusions
- Contusions of the elbow.
Common in football, volleyball, and basketball.
Caused by direct trauma to elbow either from falling on a hard surface or a blow from an object.
Symptoms - Swelling, bruising, and severe pain over elbow.
- Strains
- Elbow muscle strains.
Common in football, soccer, and wrestling.
Caused by hyperextension of the elbow.
Symptoms - Pain during active and resistive movement, point tenderness over area of strain, and weakness of muscle.
- Sprains
- Elbow ligament sprains.
Common in football, wrestling, and throwing sports.
Caused by hyperextension of the elbow or by a valgus force being placed on the elbow joint.
Symptoms - Pain and inability to throw or grasp, point tenderness over medial collateral ligament.
- Dislocations
- Dislocation of the elbow.
Common in football and wrestling.
Caused by falling on an outstretched hand with elbow extended or by severe twisting while elbow is flexed.
Symptoms - Extreme pain, internal bleeding, disability, and deformity.
- Fractures
- Elbow fractures.
Common in many sports but most often football, wrestling, soccer, or basketball.
Caused by falling on an outstretched arm, falling on elbow, or by receiving a direct blow to the elbow.
Symptoms - Visible deformity, pain, some loss of function, swelling, hemorrhage, and muscle spasm.
