Lymphedema Management Program
Lymphedema is the swelling of an extremity, i.e. arm, leg, etc. which can occur as a result of radiation treatment, surgery, trauma, cancer surgery where lymph nodes are removed, or may develop for unknown reasons. The Lymphedema Management Program at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa offers four treatments for the disorder.
- Treatment 1: Manual Lymph Drainage:
Manual movement of fluid. - Treatment 2: Bandaging and Compression:
Application of bandages and foam with gradient compression. - Treatment 3: Skin Care:
An important step in the program due to changes in circulation. - Treatment 4: Exercises:
Assist in movement of fluid at the muscle pumps.
