Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
A flexible sigmoidoscopy procedure is the examination of the left side of your large intestine or colon, the anal canal, and rectum with a lighted flexible tube. The tube is inserted through the rectum into the large intestine for direct visualization of the lining of the colon. The scope will allow the physician to take biopsies or tissue samples if necessary, confirm x-ray reports and diagnose such conditions as cancer, polyps, strictures, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease. The sigmoidoscopy is commonly being used as part of the physical examination for people over 50 as well as for those with rectal bleeding, altered bowel habits abdominal pain , or weight loss. The flexible sigmoidoscopy takes about 15 minutes to perform and takes place in the Endoscopy Department or the doctor’s office by a specially trained physician (Endoscopist).
Preparation for the procedure
It is necessary for the lower part of the colon to be cleared of stool to give
your doctor the clearest possible view. Your doctor or nurse will provide
you with detailed instructions on preparation of your colon for this exam.
This may involve taking some laxatives or receiving some enemas prior to
the exam. Your cooperation is important for a good exam.
During the procedure
You will be lying on your left side during the exam. A nurse will be at your
side while the doctor performs the procedure; it usually takes about 15 minutes.
After the procedure
The only discomfort afterwards is generally limited to a bloated feeling due
to air injected during the examination. This will be relieved when you are
able to pass the air.
If you are an inpatient, you will be returned to your room by wheelchair. Your doctor will talk to you about your diet plans following the procedure and discuss his findings with you and your family.
You may resume normal activity unless you are instructed differently.
If you have additional questions, your doctor will be happy to discuss these before the exam or you may call Mercy Endoscopy Services at 641.422.7394.
