Healthy Eating on Hemodialysis

Use the following information only under the advice of your physician

Food Group Choose: Limit:
Protein Foods:
(Choose6-8 oz. per day)
Beef, Pork, Poultry, Fish, Eggs, Egg Substitute, Peanut Butter (2-3 times a week) Nutritional Supplement Drink = 1 oz. Cottage Cheese ¼ c = 1 oz Salty meats such as Ham, Bacon, Hot Dogs, Sausage, Luncheon Meats, Processed Cheeses, etc.
Milk Products: Milk, Pudding, Ice Cream Limit to 1/2 cup a day
Non-dairy Creamer: (Use in place of milk on cereal or in cooking) May use up to 2 cups a day
Grains:
(Choose 8 or more a day.)
White Bread, Pasta, Rice,
Refined Cereals,
Low Salt Crackers, etc.
Whole Grain Breads
Bran Cereals,
Salty Crackers, etc.
Potatoes:
½ cup serving a day only
(soak potatoes to reduce potassium)
Salty Fries, Instant Potatoes
Baked Potatoes
Other Vegetables: 2 to 4 servings a day: Green Beans, Carrots, Peas, Lettuce, Canned Corn, Tomato Sc. (1/2 c./day) Broccoli, Cauliflower, Onions, etc. Sauerkraut, Legumes, Sweet Corn, Squash, Tomatoes in season, Beets, Sweet Potatoes
Fruits: 2 to 4 servings a day: Apples, Grapes, Canned Fruits May have 1 serving a day: Bananas, Oranges, Melons
Grapefruit, Strawberries
Fluids:


Ask your doctor how many cups/day:
Water, Coffee, Tea, Jello,
Juices: Apple, Grape, Cranberry, Homemade Soups, Etc.
Milk Drinks, Colas,
Salty Broths, Canned Soups,
Juices: Tomato, V-8, Orange, Grapefruit
Fats: Margarine, Mayonnaise, etc. Nuts, Salty Salad Dressings
Desserts/Sweets:
Cake, Cookies, Pie, Hard Candy, Etc.(Limit if diabetic) Desserts made with large amounts of milk or chocolate
Seasonings/Condiments:
Pappa Dash, Mama Dash
Onion Powder, Garlic Powder
PERC Seasonings, etc.
Salt, Onion Salt, Garlic Salt,
MSG Seasonings, etc.
Packaged/Canned Foods: Choose foods under 350mg. sodium per serving.
Choose foods under 1000 mg. sodium per meal. (TV dinners, etc.)
