Benefits of Good Diabetes Control for Patients with Kidney Disease
Good
diabetes control reduces risk for:
- Nephropathy (damage to kidneys)
- Retinopathy (damage to eyes)
- Neuropathy (damage to nerves)
- Coronary Disease (damage to heart & vessels)
Patients with good diabetes control are usually in better nutritional status.
Patients with good diabetes control heal more quickly, have less risk for infection, and are hospitalized less often than those with poor control.
Patients with good diabetes control are able to better manage fluids when on dialysis. (High blood sugars increase thirst.)
