KT/V and URR

Sounds like Greek? These are two lab tests, which are done every month for patients on hemodialysis and every three months for patients on peritoneal dialysis.

KT/V and URR are both tests that indicate if you are getting good dialysis. KT/V compares your lab work before and after treatment, factoring in the clearance of waste products, time on dialysis, and the volume of blood dialyzed. URR (urea reduction ratio) determines how much urea waste was cleared during a dialysis treatment.

Patients who are not getting enough dialysis may have poor appetite, nausea and/or vomiting, weight loss, weakness, and/or fatigue.

Dialysis Adequacy Goals:
Hemodialysis:
  Goal KT/V (not diabetic): 1.2 Your KT/V:_____
  Goal KT/V (diabetic): 1.4 Your KT/V:_____
  Goal URR: 65% Your URR:_____
Peritoneal Dialysis:
  Goal KT/V (CAPD): 2.0 Your KT/V:_____
  Goal KT/V(Cycler): 2.2 Your KT/V:_____

Ways to Improve Dialysis:
If your KT/V or URR is less than recommended, the dialysis staff will consider several ways to improve your dialysis. These include: changing needle or dialyzer size, increasing blood flow through the machine, checking to see if your access is working properly, or increasing your time on dialysis.
