Clinical Trials

Mercy Cancer Center has been doing clinical trials since 1983 and offers a variety of clinical trials. Rather than travel to academic medical centers to access the latest cancer treatment drugs and methods, patients can obtain this level of care at Mercy Cancer Center.

Mercy is an active member of the following clinical trial groups:

  • NCCTG - North Central Cancer Treatment Group
  • NSABP - National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project
  • CTSU - Cancer Trials Support Unit
  • ECOG - Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group

In 1983, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated the Iowa Oncology Research Association (IORA) as a community clinical oncology program. Mercy Cancer Center is a member of the IORA. The IORA has worked diligently to provide Iowans with access to both cancer treatment and cancer prevention clinical trails.

Mercy Cancer Center currently participates in clinical trials for the treatment of the following cancers: brain, breast, colon, rectal, anal, esophageal, pancreatic, urologic, gastrointestinal, prostate, head and neck, lung, unknown cancers and hematology (blood cancers) including non-hodgkin’s, mantle cell, ovarian, endometrial, myeloma, and leukemia.

Mercy Cancer Center is involved in the following cancer control/ prevention studies/chemo toxicities:

  • Prophylactic Topical Sunscreen to Prevent Erlotinib (Tarceva) or Cetuximab (Erbitux) induced skin rash
  • The use of Vitamin E for prevention of Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Anorexia: double-blind placebo controlled randomized comparison of Creatinine for cancer associated weight loss.

Entry into a research study always is a joint decision between the physician and the patient. By looking at the pros and cons of clinical trials and other treatment choices, patients take an active role in life changing decisions. If you are interested in a research study, please ask your physician if this may be an option for you.
