Chemotherapy Instructions
Before Chemotherapy
- You may eat before coming for your chemotherapy. Many people find
it helpful to eat a light breakfast or lunch.
- A blood test will be done before chemotherapy is ordered.
- Write down any questions or side effects you may have. Bring these
with you to discuss with your doctor or nurse.
- You may continue to take your prescription medications unless your
doctor gives you other instructions.
- Bring someone to drive you home. You may get medicines that make
you drowsy.
After Chemotherapy
- Before you leave the Cancer Center/Hospital a return appointment
will
be made.
- You may eat after chemotherapy. Try light meals.
- The bandage over your IV can be taken off in about an hour.
- Avoid beer or alcohol for 24 hours after chemotherapy.
- You can return to your usual activities, unless instructed otherwise.
- "Let your body be your guide." Do not overdo.
- Sexual activity is OK after chemotherapy.
- For the 48 hours after chemotherapy:
a. flush toilets twice after using the bathroom.
b. use gloves to clean up vomit, diarrhea or urine.
c. if bed sheets get soiled with vomit, diarrhea, or urine, wash twice separately
from other clothes.
- We will call you at home after your first treatment.
Other Hints
- Keep the Cancer Center phone number in
an easy to find place like on the refrigerator or right by the phone.
- Buy a thermometer. Your nurse can show you how to use it.
- Your appointments can be rescheduled, if the weather is bad or
if
important family events come up.
- ASK QUESTIONS, IF YOU HAVE THEM.
