B-Mode Acquisition and Targeting System (BAT)

B-Mode Acquisition and Targeting System (BAT) is used for the positioning of patients that are prescribed radiation therapy to organs that are readily identifiable on ultrasound images. BAT allows the radiation oncologist to use ultrasound to precisely target the organs and thus deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor with less risk of damaging healthy surrounding tissues. As a result physicians are able to maximize radiation doses while minimizing side effects, increasing the change of disease-free survival.

BAT has been used at Mercy Cancer Center since June 1, 2001 in the treatment of prostate cancer. Other organs such as breast, kidney, pancreas, liver, bladder and uterus also may be good targets for the systems. Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa was11 the second hospital in the state of Iowa to offer BAT as part of its radiation therapy treatment planning and delivery technology.
