The Flight Crew
The Mercy Air Life - North Iowa flight team is composed of a highly skilled group of aviation, medical and communication professionals. Our members have over a century of combined experience in their particular career fields.
Mercy Air Life - North Iowas four pilots and one mechanic are employed by Air Methods Corporation, a Colorado based leader in the Air Medical Industry. The pilots have over 4,000 flight hours apiece, of which over 100 hours are actual instruments; are IFR/VFR rated, have a BA or BS degree. Most hold an ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) rating, and all have superior safety records. The mechanic is AP (Airframe and Power plant) rated. All Air Methods mechanics must be approved by the FAA, have five years of experience, with 2 years field maintenance and factory school education.
The Mercy Air Life - North Iowa communication team has completed the current curriculum for air medical transportation communications.
The Mercy Air Life - North Iowa medical team is comprised of six flight nurses and four flight paramedics. The members of the medical team have years of critical care/emergency experience. The team includes certified instructors in Basic Life Support (BLS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). The medical crew received intensive training, which included rotations in the Intensive Care Unit, Operating Room (intubations), and Emergency Center. The crew maintains their skills and knowledge by serving Mercy Medical Center North Iowa departments on non-flying time and serving in the Emergency Center.
The Mercy Air Life - North Iowa medical team's clinical capabilities include:
- Cardiac and trauma resuscitation
- Endotracheal intubation
- Mechanical ventilation
- Rapid sequence intubation
- Pleural decompression
- Invasive and non-invasive cardiac monitoring
- External jugular IV therapy
- Intraosseous IV therapy.

The Medical Director
The Mercy Air Life - North Iowa Medical Director is an active participant and a vital part of this program. Matt Schiller, MD, a board certified family practice physician, has developed an excellent quality assurance program for Mercy Air Life - North Iowa. He participates in flight review and quality assurance, training of the crew, and is actively involved with direct patient care as a full time Emergency Center physician at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.
