Amanda Athon, RN, was October’s recipient for Mercy Medical Center –
North Iowa’s DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Each month a nurse
from Mercy– North Iowa is honored with The DAISY Award, which recognizes the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
Athon is a nurse on the Surgical/Oncology Unit, (4 West.) A patient’s family member nominated her for the award.
“I stayed in my father’s room all night and witnessed the diligence, attention, and compassion Amanda showed my father. She was very pleasant and easy to talk to, and she made it seem like he was her only patient that night, even though I knew she must have been very busy with other patients as well.
"At one point during the night, when she was about to administer some meds into his IV, my dad asked her to sit down for a moment. I don’t know why he had this request, but without question, she sat down next to him and paused. I was taken aback by her patience and calming demeanor. Also, my father was in tremendous pain, and Amanda was very vigilant. Not only did she do a great job caring for my father, but she even asked if I needed anything, which I feel was going above and beyond her duties that night. The next day I commented on Amanda’s helpfulness to my mother and sisters, who all four are nurses as well, and they agreed. Please extend my gratitude to Amanda. It was a very difficult time for y father and our family, and a little kindness and great care went a long way.”
