Megan Hejlik, RN, is May's recipient for Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa’s DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Megan is a nurse in Mercy's Short Stay Evaluation Area (SSEA). Patti Peterson, SSEA Nursing Director, nominated Megan for the award after receiving a letter from members of Mason City's Fire and Rescue Department.
"The Fire Department sent a note of appreciation and thanks about Megan's compassionate care and consideration for a patient that was to be transferred to the hospice inpatient unit by the Fire Department. When they arrived, the patient's condition was quite poor and would not have benefited from the transfer. Megan advocated for her patient to allow her to stay on the Short Stay Evaluation Area and pass away peacefully. This decision by the nurse clearly showed compassion and forward-thinking. … This patient did not die without family present."
