As part of comprehensive cancer care, genetics is beginning to play an important role. Mercy Cancer Center offers genetic counseling, risk assessment, genetic testing, and cancer screening recommendations for the patient and family
Genetic risk assessment is done to determine the likelihood that a cancer in a family is inherited. The goals of the program are to conduct a genetic risk assessment based on personal and family risk factors:
- To provide appropriate education for informed consent regarding genetic testing.
- To facilitate genetic testing, when appropriate, within a reasonable driving distance.
- To collaborate with medical oncologists and other referring providers regarding medical options available for genetically susceptible individuals and their families.
