This 6-bed unit opened in 1991 and is located 1½ miles from Mercy North Iowa Medical Center in a residential area of Mason City. Because of the unique nature of this facility in Iowa, special legislation was pursued, introduced, and passed that created a defined area within the Iowa Code to allow freestanding hospice inpatient units. The inpatient unit is an historic home originally built in 1874. Over one million dollars was raised to renovate the building, with the Elizabeth Muse Norris Chartable Trust providing a major gift, thus giving the inpatient unit its name. The inpatient unit staff provides expert symptom management for patients dealing with complications of advanced disease, and compassionate and comprehensive care for dying patients. In fiscal year 2009 267 patients were cared for at the inpatient unit, with an average length of stay of 3.3 days.
