Mercy North Iowa Palliative Medicine Fellowship
Unique features of the Mercy Palliative Medicine Fellowship include:
- Rural location in community of 35,000, preparing fellow for challenges and rewards of rural palliative medicine
- The only community hospital-based accredited palliative medicine fellowship in Iowa
- Six bed in-patient hospice unit, opening in 1991 as one of the first in Iowa, with plans in progress for expansion to 10 beds.
- Electives available in radiation oncology, rehabilitation, alcohol/chemical dependency, and wound care.
- One-on-one mentoring from enthusiastic supervising faculty. Faculty include general internist and family physician, both board certified in hospice and palliative medicine; and fellowship-trained
family physician who is eligible for the next scheduled hospice and palliative medicine board certification exam. - Opportunity to teach medical students, nursing students, family medicine residents, and pharmacy students and residents.
- Experience in outpatient palliative medicine clinic, long-term care, hospital in-patient palliative medicine, home hospice, and hospice inpatient unit.
- Didactic learning includes daily morning teaching sessions with faculty, monthly palliative medicine lecture series, weekly multidisciplinary tumor board conference, participation in monthly ethics committee meeting, and attendance at annual American Association of Hospice and Palliative Medicine meeting.
