Dr. Erin Peterson holds ARU Top Ten Percent AwardMASON CITY, IA – Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit has been recognized with Uniform Data System's (UDS) "Top Performer Award," placing them in the top 10 percent for facility performance in 2013. This is the fifth time Mercy’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit has been recognized with this honor.

“We are very proud of receiving national recognition for the care we provide,” said Erin Peterson, D.O., Medical Director for Mercy’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit. “Quality care doesn’t happen by chance, we are very dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our patients.”

UDS, the most widely used system for documenting the severity of patient disability and outcomes of medical rehabilitation, ranked 827 qualifying facilities throughout the nation. Mercy’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit ranked in the top 10 percent for outcomes related to functional progress, such as eating, bathing, dressing; length of stay/efficiency; discharge to community; and discharge to home or acute facilities.

“This is an exciting honor for our Acute Rehabilitation Unit,” said Diane Fischels, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “It is a tribute to the high quality of care that Mercy’s medical staff, nurses, aides and rehab therapists provide to rehabilitation patients right here in our own community.”

Mercy-North Iowa’s 12-bed Acute Rehabilitation Unit opened in 2002 to provide a comprehensive range of rehabilitative services to patients needing rehabilitative care, such as stroke, brain injury, orthopedic injury, neurological disorder, amputation, and spinal cord injury. The rehabilitation team includes a physiatrist (physician with a specialty in physical medicine), registered nurses and assistive staff, physical therapy staff, occupational therapy staff, speech pathologists, psychologists, respiratory therapists, social workers, and dietitians.
