Join Mercy Diabetes Center & Kohl’s Department Store for fun, education, and entertainment at the Diabetes Prevention and Awareness event for North Iowa children and families on Thursday, June 20 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Music Man Square, Mason City.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet IndyCar Racer Charlie Kimball (who has type I diabetes) as a featured guest;
  • Hear from Robert Larson, M.D., Pediatric Endocrinologist;
  • Visit with Vivian Murray, Director of Camp Hertko Hollow;
  • Learn healthy eating tips from Keith Hargis, Registered Dietitian, Mercy Diabetes Center;
  • Talk with a variety of experts one-on-one.

There are two tracks available: Track One - Designed for youth with type I Diabetes; or Track Two - Designed for youth with type 2, or at risk of getting type 2.

What puts kids at risk of type 2 diabetes? There are several factors that can determine a youth’s risk for type 2 diabetes, those risks include:

  • Have a mom, dad, sister, brother or other close relative who has type 2 diabetes;
  • Tendency to be overweight;
  • Do not get enough physical activity.

The event is FREE to attend, but registration is required. Call Mercy Diabetes Center to register: 641-428-6385. Appetizers will be served and participants can sign up for door prizes.
