Mercy Cancer Center, along with its network hospital partners, is sponsoring the distribution of free colorectal screening kits to raise awareness that colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, is largely preventable. These free kits will be available to the public in Mason City as follows:
May 21 - 23
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa, East Campus Main Entrance
1000 4th Street SW, Mason City
12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Mercy Home Therapy Shoppe
1501 4th Street SW, Mason City

100 S. Federal Avenue, Mason City
* Other North Iowa distribution sites listed below
The free kit involves a fecal occult blood test, a simple at-home procedure that checks stool samples for hidden blood, which can be a sign of cancer, polyps, or other internal disorders. All results are kept confidential and mailed directly back to the home address provided at the time the kit is picked up.
The participant will have the option on the registration form to have the test results sent to their primary care provider. If you are age 50 or older, even if you have no family history of the disease, you are at risk for colon cancer and should ask your physician about getting tested or pick up a free kit.
People with a family or personal history of colon cancer or polyps or history of chronic inflammatory bowel disease should be tested earlier, and may need to undergo testing more often.
