Emergency Department Replacement Project
Mercy – North Iowa’s ED Replacement
Project Moving Forward
Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa is moving forward with plans for its Emergency Department Replacement Project.
Mercy – North Iowa officials in October announced that the organization would be undergoing a $17.6 million replacement project to the existing Emergency Department (ED). An estimated completion date for the project is 2012.
Flad Architects, located in Madison, Wisconsin, was selected as the architect to design the new Emergency Department; Mason City-based Bergland and Cram Architects will complete interior design. Another Mason City business, Henkel Construction, was chosen as the general contractor.
This web page has been developed. As construction begins, this web site will include up-to-date information, as traffic may need to be rerouted to the Emergency Department and East Campus, 1000 4th Street S.W.
Thirteen houses on Third Street S.W., located to the west of Mercy – North Iowa’s East Campus, will be removed from their original sites. This was one of the initial steps of the overall replacement project as the houses are being removed in an effort to enhance convenient parking near the East Campus for patients, their families, medical staff and associates.
Mercy wanted to offer the option of removing and relocating the houses instead of demolishing them because these houses have useful life left and it’s the right thing to do environmentally.
The replacement project plans call for the proposed 25,493-square feet ED to be located in the vicinity of the current one, which is on the east side of Mercy – North Iowa’s East Campus.
The ED project has been identified as a high priority for the organization in order to enhance:
- Patient, family, physician/provider and associate satisfaction.
- Patient, family, physician/provider and associate safety.
- Patient privacy.
- Operational improvements and efficiencies.
For many of Mercy – North Iowa’s patients, the ED is the “front door” to obtain healthcare services. “The new ED will create a patient-centered healing environment for those seeking care,” said Jim FitzPatrick, President/CEO, Mercy – North Iowa.
