Pharmacy Practice Residency
Program Overview
Expected outcomes of the residency include:
- Provision of pharmaceutical care in multiple environments
- Function as a contributing member of an inter-disciplinary health care team enhancing patient care.
- Education of patients and health care professionals
- Personal commitment to life-long learning, self-assessment and self-evaluation
- Commitment to advancing pharmaceutical care and the pharmacy profession
- Able to establish and manage their own pharmaceutical care practice
Statement of Purpose
Pharmacists completing this residency program will be competent and confident providers of pharmaceutical care in multiple environments. They will be both responsible and accountable for achieving the best possible drug therapy outcomes for patients as members of the inter-disciplinary healthcare team. They will be skillful educators of patients, healthcare professionals and the community on medication related topics. They will establish a personal philosophy of practice which includes a commitment to life long learning through the ongoing assessment and evaluation of their own performance. They will demonstrate leadership through advancing the practice and profession of pharmacy. Pharmacists completing this residency program will also be able to establish and manage their own pharmaceutical care practice.
Preceptors
Mike Ahrens, R.Ph., is Manager of Acute Care Pharmacy Services. He received his B.S. in pharmacy from Drake University and is an adjunct instructor with Drake University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Mike serves as preceptor for medication use processes. He has participated in initiatives to improve patient medication safety at the local, corporate, state and national levels. Mike is a member of North Iowa Pharmacy, Inc., the Iowa Pharmacy Association, and ASHP. His professional interests include patient safety, automation, and information systems technology, quality enhancement, and medication use management.
Brandi Baldosier, Pharm. D, completed the pharmacy practice residency program at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa and is now a clinical pharmacist at Mercy. She attended Luther College and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. She is interested in diabetes and geriatrics.
Tim Becker, R.Ph., FASCP, CGP, is Lead Pharmacist of Forest Park Pharmacy. Forest Park is a community pharmacy that employs 4 pharmacists and is located near the Forest Park Clinics. Tim received his B.S. in pharmacy from the University of Iowa. He serves as an adjunct faculty for U of I and as a preceptor for Pharm.D. clinical rotations for pharmaceutical care and for the post-graduate residency program. Tim is certified by the Iowa Center for Pharmaceutical Care (ICPC), holds a fellowship in the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Pharmacy Association and speaker of the House of Delegates. Tim has also received certification in Geriatric Pharmacotherapy. His interests include traditional community pharmacy augmented with more in-depth disease state management as afforded by the ICPC model of pharmaceutical care. He is also very interested in geriatric pharmacotherapy, serving as a provider and/or consultant to over a dozen nursing homes and hospice.
Dave Blaha, Pharm.D., is the Clinical Pharmacist of Critical Care/Cardiology Services. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Iowa and completed a pharmacy practice residency at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His professional interests include cardiology, critical care, and infectious disease.
Al Borchardt, R.Ph., is a Cancer Center outpatient pharmacist at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. He has worked there since 1992. Al is also an acute care staff pharmacist since 1985. He received his AS degree from North Area Iowa Community College and his BS in pharmacy from the University of Iowa-College of Pharmacy in 1985. Al is an adjunct instructor with Drake University College of Pharmacy, and one of the preceptors for the residency oncology rotation. His professional interests include oncology and continuous quality improvement.
Sue Goranson, R.Ph. provides much of the training for the Acute Care Pharmacy rotation. Sue graduated from Creighton University School of Pharmacy and has worked at Mercy since 1992. She is a preceptor for pharmacy students and an adjunct professor for Drake University College of Pharmacy. Sue has been the Lead Pharmacist for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in the past and has been involved with the Nursing and Pharmacy Liaison Committee since 1995.
Jill Leisure, Pharm.D., is the lead pharmacist of the Anticoagulation Management Services (AMS) Clinic. the AMS Clinic is an ambulatory clinic which serves approximately 500 patients in North Iowa. Jill received here bachelor of science in pharamcy from South Dakota State University in 1991, and completed her doctor of pharmacy at the University of Iowa in 2002. Her professional interests include anticoagulation, diabetes and geriatarics.
Janet Lovick, Pharm. D., is a clinical pharmacist at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. She received her doctor of Pharmacy degree from Creighton University and completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics (now known as Fairview-University Medical Center). She was a decentralized clinical pharmacist in the areas of critical care and cardiology at United Hospital in St. Paul, MN for five years prior to coming to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in August 2001. Her professional interests include critical care, cardiology, anticoagulation, and nutrition. She is a member of the ASHP and IPA.
Leman Olson, R.Ph., is Manager of Mercy Family Pharmacies and serves as the preceptor for Ambulatory Services Management. He received his B.S. from South Dakota State University College of Pharmacy. Leman has been active in pharmacy association work for several years. In the past, he has been: a speaker of the house and president of the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA), board member and president of PNI (the for profit subsidiary of IPA), a board member of the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation, and a trustee on the board of the American Pharmaceutical Association in Washington, D.C. Most recently, Leman was appointed by our Governor to serve as a member of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners. He has spent his career in community pharmacy and owned a pharmacy for 20 years. His professional interests are promoting pharmaceutical care and the role of the pharmacist within the health care team, pharmacy practice and financial management. Leman is a member of IPA, APhA, and ASHP.
Craig Osland, M.S., R.Ph., has served as Director of Pharmaceutical Care Services at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa since October 1995. He was an Assistant Director of Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Hospital and Pharmacy Supervisor at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas prior to returning to the Midwest where he was born and raised. He received his B.S. in pharmacy from South Dakota State University, and his M.S. degree and two year administrative residency from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW Hospital and Clinics. He is an adjunct assistant professor and preceptor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and Drake University College of Pharmacy. He is on the Mercy Resource Management, Inc.-McKesson Advisory Board, and has served on various group-purchasing committees. He is a member of ASHP and IPA. His professional interests include Integrated Health Care Delivery Networks (IHDN's), integration of pharmaceutical care and pharmacy services across the continuum of care, pharmacy practice management, productivity and financial management, quality/process improvements and customer service.
Carol Smestad Anderson, R.Ph., Pharm. D., is a clinical pharmacist at the Mercy Cancer Center and at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. A 10-year member of the pharmacist staff, Carol's responsibilities include outpatient clinical pharmacy services at the Cancer Center, inpatient critical care/cardiology areas as well as inpatient infectious disease clinical pharmacy services. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from North Dakota State University in 1986 and her Doctor of Pharmacy with honors from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 2001. Carol is an adjunct instructor with Drake University's College of Pharmacy and enjoys serving as one of the residency oncology preceptors. A member of North Iowa Pharmacists Inc., IPA and ASHP, her professional interests include oncology, immunotherapeutics, clinical drug research and infectious disease.
John Swegle, Pharm.D., BCPS, is a clinical pharmacist on faculty at the Family Practice Residency Program at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. He is also an assistant professor (clinical) for the University of Iowa - College of Pharmacy. He received his B.S degree in pharmacy from Drake University, and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Iowa. In addition, he has completed a pharmacy residency in Family Medicine from the University of Iowa - College of Pharmacy and the University of Iowa Department of Family Medicine. His areas of interest include geriatrics, psychiatry, and cardiology.
Sarah Swegle, R.Ph. is a long-term care pharmacist with Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. The long-term care pharmacy provides consultation services for 6 nursing homes in the area and prescription services for 11. Sarah is a graduate of the Drake University College of Pharmacy, and a member of North Iowa Pharmacists Inc. Her professional interests include diabetes and long term care. She is a member of the IPA and ASCP.

Project
The resident is required to complete one major project pertaining to a particular pharmacy topic or issue. A final report of this project must be prepared and formally presented.
External Professional Activities
The resident is required to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and participate in the Residency Showcase. The resident is encouraged to participate in the resident poster presentation at this same meeting.
Accreditation
The 12-month residency program is ASHP accredited for two positions.
Stipend/Benefit Information
The stipend for the 12-month residency is $36,000
The resident receives two weeks of paid vacation, plus approved holidays. The resident is eligible for the medical benefits listed on the fact sheet enclosed in the packet.
