Message from the Director
As you review the options for palliative medicine fellowship training, you will quickly see that many excellent programs are available. You may be asking what makes Mercy North Iowa Palliative Medicine Fellowship unique. I would highlight the following:
-
Hospice and palliative care have been a part of the medical community for many years. Hospice of North Iowa began with a group of local visionaries meeting in March 1981 to discuss the feasibility of starting a hospice in Mason City, Iowa. A tradition of twenty-nine years of dedication to quality end-of-life care is the foundation for this program.
-
The training program functions within a compact geographical area that minimizes travel. Learning across venues can occur efficiently, and the potential for continuity experiences is outstanding.
-
The faculty and staff model collegiality, creativity, and commitment in a nurturing environment of interdependence and respect. We recognize our leadership role in advancing hospice and palliative medicine in Iowa and beyond.
-
Affiliation with a community-based family medicine residency allows opportunity to frequently interact with enthusiastic learners, including family medicine residents, pharmacy residents, medical students, and pharmacy students.
I hope you will feel free to investigate us further if what I’ve shared sparks your interest. I believe we can offer you an outstanding educational experience. Regardless of where your search ultimately takes you, I wish you much success and personal satisfaction as you pursue a career in palliative medicine.
W. David Clark, MD
